Epic Universe – Isle of Berk: My First Stop & a Must-See for Any Dreamer

I just got back from experiencing Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe, and WOW. I don’t even know where to begin. The entire park is beyond anything I’ve ever seen. The level of immersion is next-level—the kind that makes you stop, stare, and forget reality exists outside the portal you just walked through.
Seriously, the portals alone are an experience. You can’t see anything inside until you pass through, and then boom—grand reveal. Pure magic. My first stop? Isle of Berk. And even if you’ve never watched a How to Train Your Dragon movie, I promise you’ll fall in love.
The animatronic dragons scattered throughout are breathtaking—colorful, detailed, and full of personality. I stopped at nearly every one to grab video. (Shoutout to Ruff and Tuff—Ruff totally made my day with some hilarious banter.)
And then—fangirl moment—I MET TOOTHLESS AND HICCUP! Toothless is an animatronic but feels alive. You can pet him, feel him breathing, hear little growls, and if you're lucky, he’ll give you a nuzzle. I couldn’t stop smiling. And Hiccup? Absolute perfection. His voice, his mannerisms—it was like the movie came to life. Just... prepare to be emotionally unprepared. (Also, yes, I accidentally filmed the sky instead of our interaction. Oops.)
The Untameable Dragon Show
This show is a must-see. It’s set in the Berk hatchery and features Hiccup, Toothless, and some pretty epic puppet/animatronic work. They even fly over the audience. 😱 Projection mapping, music, storytelling—it’s all there. My tip? Sit mid-theatre and a few rows back to take in the full stage magic. Get there 30 minutes early to grab a great seat.
Food at Mead Hall
On my second visit, I tried the Berserker’s Meatballs at Mead Hall. Think IKEA meatballs—but upgraded. The onion gravy and lingonberry sauce hit the spot, but it was the smashed root vegetables that surprised me. Not quite sweet potato—more like a carrot-based blend. Hearty, warm, and at $17.99, a solid value for theme park food.
Rides Recap
Hiccup’s Wing Gliders – My fave! If you love Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure, you’ll be obsessed with this one. Smooth launches, great theming, and even a “fake-out” reverse moment before soaring again. No track drop, but it still thrills.
Fyre Drill – Skip for me, but cute for families. Think: boat ride + water fight. You will get soaked.
Dragon Racer’s Rally – Sadly went down just before our turn. It’s a spinning glider ride, but you really have to try to spin it—great for those who want a gentler ride.
Merch Madness
From glow-in-the-dark Toothless tees to Viking shields and gear, the shops here are dangerous for your wallet (in the best way). I wanted it all. But I had to save my coins for the Wizarding World’s Battle at the Ministry, which I’ll cover in my next post.
